A Zambia Police Officer, Raphael Mupatayi, has reportedly died in a road traffic accident that occurred near Kenneth Kaunda International Airport.

Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, said Constable Mupatayi, 28, was riding a motorbike when he collided with a Mercedes Benz driven by Dorothy Kumwenda.

Hamoonga, in a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, stated that Mupatayi was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Mercedes Benz failed to yield the right of way to the motorbike,” he said.

Hamoonga added that another officer, Constable John Mulenga, 29, who was riding with Mupatayi, sustained serious injuries and was receiving medical attention.

“A case docket has been opened, and thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident are currently underway,” he said.

Expressing the Zambia Police Service’s condolences to the families of those involved, Hamoonga urged all road users to adhere to traffic regulations.

“The Inspector General of Police and the entire police service extend their heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Mupatayi during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are also with Mulenga for a swift and full recovery,” he said.
