Police nab 39-year-old woman for alleged assault, raid dark spots in Chalala, Libala, others

Police in Lusaka have arrested a female suspect for allegedly pouring boiling water on her 25-year-old niece, identified as Gloria Mudenda.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Danny Mwale, identified the suspect as Jane Gondwe, 39, of old Kanyama compound.

In statement issued on Sunday, Mwale said the victim who also sustained a cut on the right side of her head, alleged that she was also hit with different objects including a frying pan before boiling water was poured on her.

“She suffered severe burns on her back,” Mwale indicated.

He said members of the public intervened and rushed the victim to Kanyama Level One Hospital where she was admitted and the clinic later discribed her condition as ‘stable’.

“The incident happened on February 17, 2023 around 11:00 hours in Old Kanyama compound top five area.”

Mwale gave more details, saying “the incident was reported to Police at 16:30 hours and immediately investigations were instituted leading to the arrest of the suspect,”

He said that preliminary investigations revealed that Gondwe sells Chickens and on February 17, 2024 it was Mudenda who was supposed to dress the chickens in readiness for sales but that she gave an excuse that she was not feeling well.

“This angered her aunty who reacted by pouring boiling water meant for tea on her before hitting her with different objects including a frying pan,” Mwale added.

He said the suspect had been detained in Police custody waiting to be formally charged.

Meanwhile, Mwale explained that police carried out an operation in Lusaka’s Chalala, Libala, Chris Corner area, Mahopo and Mapoloto targeting people who had been behind a spate of robberies and attacks in the communities.

He revealed that 27 suspects aged between 23 and 50 including two women were picked and were currently undergoing screening process.

“All suspects are in safe custody waiting to be charged,” he said.
