Police in Mbabala Constituency, Southern Province, have launched a manhunt for six suspects who escaped from lawful custody at the Mbabala District Police Post in the early hours of Sunday.
The suspects broke out on December 29, 2024, at around 23:50 hours by damaging the grill locks of the main door.
The escape was discovered during a routine check at midnight when officers found the holding cell empty.
The six escapees have been identified as Sunday Halwindi, aged 24, and Victor Mudenda, aged 30, both arrested for stock theft.
Choolwe Kandimba, aged 28, and Lweendo Hamilandu, aged 27, were in custody for possession of suspected stolen property. Kaunda Muleya, aged 53, was arrested for theft, while Timothy Muungo, aged 23, was detained for burglary and theft.

Southern Province Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Choma on Monday.
He revealed that the suspects damaged the grill locks with an unknown tool and fled undetected. Dockets have been opened, and a manhunt for the suspects is underway, but no arrests have yet been made.
Commissioner Daka cautioned police officers to remain vigilant and to conduct frequent inspections of holding cells, particularly those located away from the front desk.
He noted that inmates often take advantage of heavy rains to break out unnoticed, as appears to have been the case in this incident.
