Police in Eastern Province have arrested two witch doctors allegedly hired by Nelson Banda, the fugitive brother of Petauke Central lawmaker Emmanuel Banda, to harm President Hakainde Hichilema.
Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, disclosed that the suspects received an initial payment of K16,500 out of an agreed K30,000 advance, with a promise of K2 million upon completing the mission.
Hamoonga, in a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday, revealed that the arrests were carried out with assistance from the Department of Immigration and the Anti-Terrorism Unit.
The suspects were identified as Jasten Mabulesse Candunde, 42, of Maravia in Mozambique and Leonard Phiri, 43, of Kafewa Village, Chief Nyanje, Sinda District
“The suspects were found in possession of assorted charms, including a live chameleon, and are alleged to be practicing witch doctors,” Hamoonga said.
Preliminary investigations indicated that Nelson Banda, currently on the run, engaged the duo to use charms against the President.
The suspects face multiple charges, including professing knowledge of witchcraft, under Section 5(a) of the Witchcraft Act, Chapter 90 of the Laws of Zambia.
