Police arrest John Howard woman over suspected child theft

A woman of Lusaka’s John Howard compound has been arrested by the police for child theft.

This is barely five days after a report of a missing child, identified as Joy Mubili, was filed to the police.

According to Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, Chelston Police was informed by an undisclosed source that the missing child was seen with an unknown girl in Chelston Police Camp.

Hamoonga narrated that an investigation was launched into the matter and the child was retrieved on December 4, 2023.

In a statement issued in Lusaka On Thursday, he disclosed that the unknown girl, 19, who’s full identity the police concealed was interviewed and she explained that a woman, later identified as Jane Banda, 29, left the child with the 19-year-old, claiming to go sell dry fish in the camp but returned three hours later to get the child.

“Later on december 13, 2023 around 18:50 hours within Chelston area the suspect was apprehended,” he highlighted.

The suspect, Hamoonga added, led the police to her house in John Howard compound where the child was retrieved.

“The child has since been issued with a medical report form and taken to the hospital for medical check-up,” he concluded.
