Police arrest couple in Chalala area over death of maid

Police in Lusaka have arrested a couple in Chalala area, allegedly in connection with the death of their maid identified as 14-year-old Janet Chola.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Danny Mwale, said the couple identified as Marjory Lulembo and Smart Mumba, aged 30 and 36, had a confrontation with their maid before murdering her.

Mwale said this in a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday and made available to Zambia Monitor.

“Brief facts of the offence is that on August 30, 2023 around 09:00 hours, the couple identified as Marjory Lulembo and Smart Mumba aged 30 and 36 respectively went to the University Teaching Hospitals Police Post with the dead body of Janet Chola, their maid, to obtain the Brought In Dead certificate over her death,” he said.

Mwale said upon reporting, Police suspected foul play as the body had multiple physical injuries and immediately investigations were instituted which led to the detention of the suspects in Police custody.

He said further investigations revealed that the couple on August 29, 2023 had a physical confrontation with the deceased.

“The suspects remain in custody awaiting to be formally charged with the offence of murder,” Mwale said.
