Police arrest 5 suspects for attempting to traffic albinos

Five suspects in Lusaka have been arrested and charged for two counts of human trafficking by the Police.

Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, said the arrest is in Prohibition of Trafficking in persons Contrary to Section 3(1) of Act no. 16 of 2022 and attempt to commit offences Contrary to Section 12 of Act No. 11 of 2008 of the Anti- Human trafficking Act of the laws of Zambia.

Hamoonga said this in a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday.

“Brief facts of the matter are that M/ Kebby Shanyanga, aged 42, of Maloan village in chief Mukuni, M/Justine Mutaka Songa of Simwami village in Zimba District and M/ Alfred Sialubaba, aged 45, of house number 175 of Maloan compound in Livingstone are alleged to have attempted to traffic a male person, aged 41, a person living with albinism of Mwandi district and priced him at K500,000,” he said.

Hamoonga said this occurred on June 3, 2023 at a named Guest house in Kalomo District of Southern province of the Republic of Zambia.

He said in the second count, the four suspects namely Kebby Shanyanga, aged 35, Justin Mutaka Songa, aged 27, Lenon Chitumba, aged 25, a traditional healer of sky layby area in Zimba district and a male juvenile, aged 17, of unknown house number of Mawire compound are alleged to have jointly and whilst acting together attempted to traffic a man juvenile, aged 16, a grade 10 pupil at Kalomo Secondary School a person living with albinism.

“This occurred on June 3, 2023 between 16:00 and 18:00 hours in Mawire compound in Kalomo District of Southern Province of the republic of Zambia,” Hamoonga said.

He said the five accused persons are all in custody and will appear in court soon in Kalomo District.
