Police apprehend 4 suspects for vandalism, theft of ZESCO’s cables

Police in Itezhi Tezhi have arrested four individuals for alleged vandalism and theft of electricity cables in Kasamu area belonging to ZESCO Limited.

ZESCO Public Relations Manager, Muntanga Sibalwa, said the Police recovered the 16 millimetre (mm) by 4core measuring 60 meters cables valued at K17,200.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, Sibalwa said the Neighborhood Watch received information about the cable theft around 7:30hours on Sunday.

“He initiated an investigation that led to the apprehension of three suspects: Shadwell Chipopa 33, John Chinyama 24 and Amos Nyambe 24, all residents of Itezhi Tezhi,” Sibalwa stated.

She said the suspects were found in possession of 18 rolls of burned copper cables, a bolt cutter, farming implements and three bicycles believed to be used in the crime.

“The suspects guided the team to the crime scene and demonstrated their methods,” Sibalwa added.

She explained that the investigation into the matter led to the arrest of Loveness Chindungu who allegedly provided the suspects with the bolt cutter and purchased the stolen cables.

“All four suspects, including the alleged buyer are currently detained at the Itezhi Tezhi Police Station. The investigation is ongoing,” she said.

Sibalwa urged members of the public community to get involved in combating vandalism and crime.

“The neighborhood watch’s vigilance and the swift response of law enforcement officials demonstrate a collaborative effort in protecting public property and infrastructure,” she said.
