Plot to deny ex-president Lungu ticket for 2026 tearing United Kwacha Alliance apart —Sinkamba

Peter Sinkamba, leader of the Green Party, may have provided a clue to the crises threatening to tear the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) apart.

Sinkamba has claimed that the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) Council of Presidents had consistently blocked moves to endorse Lungu as the presidential candidate since the Alliance’s formation.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, Sinkamba highlighted ongoing bickering and disrespect towards the former President, a topic that had become frequent on social media.

Sinkamba also accused the UPND of infiltrating and hijacking the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) Council of Presidents.

“The UKA-UPND surrogates have used flimsy narratives to prevent Lungu’s endorsement,” he said.

Following his alleged expulsion from the Alliance, Sinkamba urged Zambians to withdraw their support for UKA, claiming it is now filled with alleged UPND surrogates and sympathizers.

Sinkamba countered claims that the Constitutional Court would declare Lungu ineligible to run in 2026, pointing out that the Court had previously ruled him eligible in similar cases.

“The Court is unlikely to risk flip-flopping this time around; such inconsistency would indicate incompetence,” he stated.

Referencing a ruling from the Judicial Complaints Commission regarding a past case, Sinkamba insisted that the judges were aware of this precedent.

He dismissed another narrative claiming that the UPND government might harm a candidate if announced early.

“This is total nonsense,” he argued, noting that the Socialist Party named its candidate well in advance and has faced no significant harm.

Sinkamba acknowledged that while Socialist Party leader Dr. Fred M’membe had faced unjust arrests, such challenges are bearable for true revolutionaries.

“Former President Lungu is not a coward; he won’t fear political harassment,” he stated.

Furthermore, Sinkamba criticized the removal of UKA Council members Sean Tembo and Apostle Danny Pule for supporting Lungu, labeling it a strategic move by surrogates to skew Council voting in favor of UPND.

“In its current state, no voting in the Council will favor Lungu, as all his supporters have been sidelined,” he concluded.
