Peace, stability in the Southern African region must be preserved- President Hichilema

President Hakainde Hichilema has emphasized on the need to preserve peace and stability in Southern African region, as he dates Namibia.

Hichilema said this ahead of an Emergency Extraordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) organ Troika summit on Politics, Defence and Security taking place on Tuesday in Namibia.

He called for the need to be vigilance in responding to emerging threats.

According to the Minister of Foriegn Affairs and International Cooperation Stanley Kakubo, President Hichilema continues to underscore Zambia’s commitment to regional peace and security, without which there would be no economic advancement.

Kakubo said in statement in Lusaka that the President emphasized the need for deliberate and intentional efforts to preserve peace and stability in the Southern African region.

“To this end, the President will use his participation in this important meeting to engage with the Troika leaders in their common efforts to find regional solutions to regional problems,” he said.

Kakubo said the President will join two other Troika members, Namibia and South Africa in his capacity as an incoming deputy chair of the organ.

The summit has been convened by Namibian President Hage Gottfried Geingob.

He said the Chair of the organ was expected to deliberate on the prevailing political and security situation in the region, among other key issues.

Kakubo said this would be preceded by the meetings of the Ministerial Committee and the senior official of the organ on Monday.

President Hichilema was expected to return to Zambia on Tuesday immediately after the summit.
