Patriotic Front questions circumstances of Chief Justice Malila’s accident, medical treatment

The Edgar Lungu-led Patriotic Front (PF) has raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding Chief Justice Mumba Malila’s recent traffic accident and subsequent medical treatment.

Faction Secretary-General, Raphael Nakacinda, expressed unease over what he described as inconsistent reports from the government regarding the Chief Justice’s condition.

Speaking at a media briefing at the party Secretariat in Lusaka on Tuesday, Nakacinda criticised government’s handling of the situation, stating that the initial response to the accident appeared to be downplayed.

Nakacinda highlighted the absence of a detailed police report on the accident, including the condition and status of the driver responsible.

He questioned why the Minister of Justice was involved in the Chief Justice’s health matters, rather than the Minister of Health, who should typically oversee medical evacuations and treatments.

He also questioned the changes in standard procedures related to the case.

“Why is the Minister of Justice involved in the Chief Justice’s health matters instead of the Minister of Health, who is financing his evacuation and treatment, and why have the standard procedures changed?” Nakacinda asked.

He called for a comprehensive government statement on the Chief Justice’s condition and demanded accurate information from security institutions.

In a separate matter, Nakacinda warned members of the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) who have criticized former President Edgar Lungu and his potential 2026 presidential bid on social media.

He asserted Lungu’s eligibility to run for President in 2026, arguing that if Lungu were deemed ineligible in 2021, then President Hakainde Hichilema’s election should be questioned as well.

Nakacinda reiterated the PF’s commitment to collaborating with like-minded parties such as Zambia We Want, the Tonse Alliance, and other stakeholders to achieve their goals.

“PF believes in UKA and will remain in UKA. We are open to other alliances, including Zambia We Want and the Tonse Alliance. In the next Central Committee meeting, we will discuss the Tonse Alliance offer and assess its objectives,” he stated.

He emphasized the importance of mutual respect and constructive debate in political discourse, reaffirming PF’s ideology and its willingness to engage with other political formations.

Nakacinda also underscored the party’s discipline and unity, recognizing its role as the main opposition with a significant presence in Parliament and across the country.

He acknowledged internal differences within the party but assured that efforts would be made to resolve these issues and maintain party unity.
