Socialist Party leader, Dr. Fred M’membe, has been released on bond after spending four days in custody at Ibex Hill Police Station, where he faced a charge of seditious practices.

On August 8, 2024, M’membe was arrested in Lusaka following the publication of an article on his Twitter and Facebook pages titled, “Tshisekedi tells DRC Catholic Bishops about the US$20 Million Payout to Buy Zambia’s Silence.”

M’membe was released on Monday to the jubilation of his supporters, who had gathered at Ibex Hill Police Station.

The crowd welcomed him with chants of “we want change.”

Addressing his jubilant supporters, M’membe accused the government of acting out of fear and insecurity rather than taking bold steps to address economic hardships.

He alleged that the government was attempting to divert attention from its own wrongdoing and unfulfilled promises.

“They have made many empty promises and pledges that they are failing to fulfill, such as policy changes or improvements, and are resorting to harassing the opposition through arrests,” M’membe stated.

He further accused the government of prioritising self-preservation over genuinely serving the people.

“Thank you, comrades. What we are witnessing are the actions of little frightened men, scared of their own shadows because of the many crimes they have committed against the Zambian people. But this will not take them anywhere,” M’membe said.

He expressed surprise that despite promises to release suspects on police bond within 24 hours, this was not being upheld.

“Tapali uko filebatwala (this will not take them anywhere). As they say, the cunning of a chicken doesn’t fool a wildcat,” he concluded.
