Charles Chanda, the leader of the United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia has urged the government to strengthen the relationship between the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Zambia Police Service.

Chanda’s call comes after the DPP’s decision not to prosecute former Patriotic Front Deputy Secretary General, Mumbi Phiri, due to lack of evidence.

Chanda in a statement issued in Kitwe on Friday, emphasized that this situation not only caused embarrassment to the government but also reflected poorly on the professionalism of the police.

He argued that the Zambia Police Service should carry out thorough investigations before making any charges.

“We have seen instances where police actions appear unprofessional, as if they are being used by politicians to settle personal scores,” Chanda said.

He stated that this was not just about one case but that it showed a pattern where the police were acting without proper evidence, almost like schoolchildren needing lessons from the DPP on how to do their job.

Chanda expressed believe that a stronger partnership between the DPP and the Zambia Police Service could prevent such embarrassing situations in the future.

“By ensuring that the police conduct diligent investigations, the integrity of the justice system can be upheld,” he said.

Chanda urged the government to take immediate action to bridge this gap, stressing that a well-functioning justice system is crucial for maintaining public trust and confidence.

He reaffirmed that effective collaboration between these two bodies was essential for ensuring justice in Zambia and preventing unprofessionalism that could lead to further complications.
