The Patriotic Front (PF) says the campaign by the United Party for National Development (UPND) to lift the immunity of Ex-President Edgar Lungu will not succeed.
According to former PF Secretary General, Davis Mwila, the campaign would not succeed as the UPND did not have enough number in Parliament to support the motion.
He alleged that with the desire and eagerness to have Lungu prosecuted, the UPND would never have hesitated to move a motion in parliament to strip the former Head of State of his immunity.
“Had the UPND been enjoying the command and arrogance of numbers in Parliament, former President Edgar Lungu would have already lost his immunity from prosecution.
“But the campaign to lift the immunity of former President Lungu by UPND shall not succeed because the governing party was not enjoying the arrogance of numbers in the House,” Mwila said in a telephone interview on Monday.
According to Mwila, UPND would never have waited for two years if they had what it needed for the immunity to be lifted.
He stated that the only way the UPND was going to please and massage their ego was to continue harassing and maligning former President Lungu with the hope to stress the former Head of State and wear him down.
Mwila said it was folly for Beene Hachoombwa, a UPND member, to launch a campaign to lift the immunity of the former Head of State when the constitution clearly dictated the legal process that would be taken before lifting the immunity of the former President.
“These cadres just wake up and start advocating for things without understanding the constitution. They do not even know what the law says.
“That campaign is going nowhere. Lifting the immunity of a former President is not as easy as waking up, holding a press conference and announcing your desires,” Mwila said.
