One of Zambia’s most decorated footballers, Mweene, retires. Things you may not know about him

Chipolopolo’s AFCON 2012 champion goalkeeper, Kennedy Mweene, has retired from active football.

Mweene announced his retirement via a video posted on South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) club, Mamelodi Sundowns’ official Facebook page, a team the keeper has played for, in a period spanning 10 years.

Mweene is famous for his heroics at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations tournament which saw Zambia claim its maiden title.

Mweene feels now is the time to hang his gloves as he has contributed immensely to the sport.

“Football has taken me to places which I never dreamt that I would one day I will be able to share the same pitch as some of the great players which Africa has offered.

“I am hanging up my boots and gloves because I have played my part at both at national team and at club level. Thank you to everyone who has contributed in my life. Most of the coaches I’ve gone through have made me a better person. They made me a better person as well. It was a successful career and it could not have happened anywhere else apart from Sundowns,” he said.

The news was greeted with plenty of tributes from both Sundowns and Chipolopolo fans.

“Thank you Mweene for everything, what a legend 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾,” one post read.

The fans eulogised him as a legendary figure.

Thank you my keeper 🧤,” read another post on the Mamelodi Sundowns page.

“He served the team with loyalty, commitment and dignity. Thank you sir 🙇🙇,” read one of the hundreds of posts celebrating the goalie’s career.

Mweene is one of the most decorated football players Zambia has ever produced.

The legendary goalkeeper has won Eight PSL titles, Three Nedbank Cups, Two Telkom knockouts, One MTN 8, One NFD title, a CAF Super League, a CAF Champions League title and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Mweene who has played for Chipolopolo on more than 120 occasions, represented Kitwe United, Lusaka Dynamos and Lusaka Celtic on the local scene before heading out to South Africa to cement his place as one of the most celebrated modern players.

Mweene had a stint with South African club, Free State Stars, before switching to Mamelodi Sundowns.
