Nkana Water deploys bowsers as water crisis persists in Kitwe, Chambishi,  Kalulushi

Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Company (NWSSC) has urged residents of Kitwe, Chambishi, and Kalulushi to remain patient as water supply disruptions persist.

Company Public Relations Manager, Bivan Saluseki, said in Kitwe on Saturday that the utility firm has dispatched water bowsers to affected townships while efforts to restore normal supply continue.

“Engineers are working around the clock to ensure the water is safe for consumption before resuming supply to residents. Meanwhile, we have started providing water to affected areas using bowsers,” Saluseki said.

He added that experts were assessing contamination levels, including allowable amounts of copper and zinc, before restoring direct supply to customers.

Meanwhile, Kalulushi District Commissioner Kelly Jibinga said Sino Metals, the company responsible for contaminating the Kafue River, has intensified awareness campaigns to discourage residents from consuming fish from unknown sources.

“Sino Metals has engaged Zambia Information Service (ZANIS) to educate people on the risks of consuming fish from undesignated areas following the contamination of Mwambashi Stream and Kafue River,” Jibinga said.

Authorities remain on high alert to prevent the sale of fish that may have died due to pollution.

The contamination was caused by the failure of Sino Metals’ tailings dam, which released pollutants into the Mwambashi and Kafue Rivers.

As a result, NWSSC shut down water supply to Kitwe over safety concerns.

In a public notice issued on Thursday, the company assured residents that water supplied before the shutdown was safe for consumption.
