Nkana Constituency Member of Parliament, Binwell Mpundu, aged 42, has been arrested for the offence of Seditious Practices after publishing a controversial article on his Facebook page.
According to Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, the incident occurred on December 20, 2024, when Mpundu, using his Facebook account under the name “Binwell Mpundu NKANA MP,” published an article titled “DEFEND YOURSELVES WITH EQUAL MEASURE.”
The article allegedly incited members of the public and politicians to acquire firearms for self-defense, a move deemed prejudicial to public order in Zambia.
Hamoonga confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Wednesday, noting that Mpundu’s actions violated Section 57(1)(c) and Section 60(1)(i) of the Penal Code Act, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

“The article, which was published on social media, encouraged individuals to take up arms in preparation for self-defense, a practice considered harmful to public order and security,” Hamoonga said.
Mpundu has been detained in police custody while awaiting the fulfillment of bond conditions.
He will appear in court shortly to face the charges.
Hamoonga reiterated the Zambian Police’s commitment to upholding the law, emphasizing that actions and statements which undermine public order will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
“We urge the public to avoid engaging in acts or making statements that could disrupt the peace and unity of our nation,” Hamoonga said.
