Newcastle United ended their 70-year wait for a domestic trophy with a well-deserved 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

The historic win also marked their first major silverware since the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969.

In a match reported by the BBC Sports, Dan Burn and Alexander Isak were the heroes for Eddie Howe’s side, scoring on either side of halftime to put Newcastle on course for glory.

Burn, fresh off his first England call-up, powered home a header from Kieran Trippier’s corner in first-half stoppage time. Isak then doubled the lead in the 52nd minute, clinically finishing from Jacob Murphy’s knockdown.

Liverpool, who were eliminated from the Champions League on penalties by Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the week, pulled one back through substitute Federico Chiesa in stoppage time. However, Newcastle held firm despite a nervy finish, sealing their long-awaited triumph.

The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations from the Toon Army, as Newcastle ended a 56-year domestic trophy drought and a run of nine consecutive Wembley defeats. The victory also guarantees them a place in European competition next season.

Howe’s side outplayed a lackluster Liverpool, with Joelinton delivering a commanding midfield performance that set the tone for Newcastle’s dominance.

The result cements Howe’s place in Newcastle history, leading a team that will forever be remembered for breaking the club’s decades-long trophy drought.

For Newcastle fans, this was more than just a cup final win—it was the long-awaited return of glory to Tyneside.

The celebrations, which began at Wembley, are sure to continue all the way home.
