New Heritage Party (NHP) leader, Chishala Kateka, has apologised to President Hakainde Hichilema for remarks attributed to the party’s Chief Spokesperson, Aggefrey Brill, questioning the Head of State’s qualifications.
Kateka distanced the party from Brill’s statement, saying it violated NHP’s engagement principles for interacting with other political parties, entities, and individuals.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, Kateka clarified that the party advocates for policy-driven politics and does not focus on personal attacks.
“President Hichilema is my brother, as are all other male leaders in this country, while all female leaders are my sisters. Indeed, all of us Zambians are brothers and sisters, and we must remember this in our political engagements,” she said.
She stated that while NHP and the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) have differing views on governance and policies, this does not imply hatred, dislike, or disrespect.
Kateka also affirmed that President Hichilema meets the constitutional requirements to serve as Head of State, stating that despite disagreements over his leadership approach, his qualifications were not in question.
Her remarks followed Brill’s earlier comments questioning Hichilema’s credentials in light of Zambia’s economic challenges.
