New Heritage Party accuses UPND government of stifling local businesses

The New Heritage Party (NHP) has accused the UPND-led government of financially stifling Zambian-owned businesses while favouring foreign companies through tax exemptions.

In a statement issued on Sunday, NHP Chief Spokesperson, Aggephrey Brill, alleged that the government was abusing state institutions to suppress citizens and local businesses under the pretext of enforcing the rule of law.

Brill claimed Zambian-owned businesses face excessive taxation and harsh penalties for non-compliance, while foreign-owned companies enjoy tax holidays and incentives.

“Apparently, this government is favoring non-Zambian businesses, offering them tax breaks while subjecting local businesses to multiple taxes and high rates,” Brill said.

He cited a Zambian-owned firm (name withheld), as an example of selective justice, stating it was taken to court over tax evasion and forced to pay K5 million after pleading guilty.

Meanwhile, he alleged Zambia loses billions through tax holidays granted to foreign mining firms.

Brill further accused the government of misusing institutions such as the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA), police, Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), and laws like the Cyber Crimes Act to intimidate and silence critics.

“The abuse of these institutions and laws is crippling local businesses and driving Zambian families into poverty,” he said.

Brill called on the UPND government to adopt fair and transparent policies that benefit both local and foreign enterprises equally, warning against further suppression of Zambian-owned businesses.
