National Road Fund Agency reportedly earns K4 billion, exceeds 2024 toll collection target

The National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) has reportedly exceeded its 2024 toll collection target, amassing K4 billion—well above the projected K2.7 billion.

According to statement by NRFA Public Relations Manager, Alphonsius Hamachila, the funds have reportedly been allocated for road infrastructure projects and related activities nationwide.

Hamachila disclosed that K795 million of the total collections were processed through the agency’s electronic card payment system, with 25 percent of these transactions made via mobile phone platforms.

Speaking in Chipata ahead of the Nc’wala Traditional Ceremony of the Ngoni-speaking people, scheduled for Saturday, Hamachila urged motorists traveling to Eastern Province to use electronic toll cards.

He noted that this would help reduce congestion at toll gates along the Great East Road, where heavy traffic is expected.

“NRFA manages three toll gates along this route: one in Chongwe, the Alexander Grey Zulu Toll Gate between Nyimba and Petauke, and the Reuben Chitandika Kamanga Toll Gate between Katete and Chipata. These toll gates collectively handle an average of 7,000 vehicles daily, a number expected to rise significantly this week,” he said.

Hamachila encouraged motorists to obtain electronic toll cards from the NRFA headquarters in Lusaka or any toll gate nationwide, emphasizing their role in reducing wait times and ensuring smoother travel.

“The agency remains committed to improving road infrastructure and facilitating efficient transportation through effective toll collection and management systems,” he added.
