About K1.2 million worth of merchandise at Kitwe‘s Old Nakadoli Market have been reportedly lost in an inferno that has gutted seven furniture shops.
According to eyewitnesses, fire started in the early hours of Wednesday with seven carpentry workshops completely gutted.
Association of Vendors and Marketeers in Zambia (AVEMA) Kitwe district Chairperson, Astone Sakala, said it was regrettable that traders had become victims of fire in the district .
In an interview with Zambia Monitor in Kitwe, Sakala recalled that barely a month ago there was a similar incident at Chisokone market.

“This will be difficult for the traders to cope with because they have lost their capital,” Sakala said
On the other hand, Copperbelt Police Chief, Peacewell Mweemba, said the incident happened around 03:00 hours.
The incident, according to Mweemba was reported by John Mutandwe 63, a carpenter, that his shop and six others were burnt in a fire outbreak.
Facts of the matter were that William Mwitwa a security guard while guarding the area saw fire flames in one of the shops and informed Mutandwe who later rushed to the police to report the matter.
A combined team of Kitwe City Council (KCC) fire brigade and Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) managed to put out the fire.
Less than a month ago, the Chisokone curio section was brought down by fire, sending 175 traders out of business.
