A man in his late 20s is nursing gunshot wounds in hospital after he allegedly accidentally shot himself with a home made gun during an illegal hunting spree.
It is reported this happened while illegally hunting in the bush with his brother in Mwinilung’a ditrict of North-Western Zambia.
Ian Wunyumbi 31 reportedly to have accidentally shot himself on his right arm using a man made home shot gun and sustained gun shot wounds on his right upper arm and armpit.
North – Western Province commanding officer Dennis Moola said in a statement on Sunday that the incident happened on Friday around 07:00 hours at Kayinda village in Mwanamatuwo area.
Moola said a 27-year-old man in Mwinilunga is nursing gunshot wounds in hospital after he accidentally shot himself using a man made home gun as he was illegally hunting in the bush.
The victim together with his young brother Jesman Kabwita 18 had gone for illegal hunting whilst armed with a man made shot gun.
Whilst in the bush they heard some noise of people whom they suspected to be Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) officers and opted to hide the gun in the bush but in the process, he accidentally shot him self on the right upper arm.
The Northwest police chief said the victim was then rushed to Mwinilunga police station with the help of his young brother where the matter was reported and later rushed to Mwinilunga district hospital for medical treatment.
He said the condition worsened and the victim was later referred to Solwezi general hospital where he is currently getting medical attention.
Moola said the man made fire arm had not yet been recovered but that investigations had been instituted in the matter.
