The medical team observing ex-Chipolopolo Zambia captain Enock Mwepu have disclosed that he is making good progress after he was admitted over the weekend at the National Heart Hospital in Lusaka.

Mwepu was admitted to the National Heart Hospital on Sunday after he felt unwell.

The 25-year-old former midfielder has a congenital heart condition that led to his retirement from the game in October.

“Yes, he is our patient, and he is in high spirits, we are still doing our assessments and we will be keeping you posted in due course with any development,” National Heart Hospital senior medical superintendent Chabwela Shumba said on Monday morning.

“But today, he says he feels much better and is very glad to hear that the entire country has sent him their prayers,” Mwepu said.

He also got some visitors on Monday morning when Sports Minister Elvis Nkandu and officials from the Football Association of Zambia checked on him.

Mwepu’s condition was detected last October by the medical team at his English club Brighton & Hove Albion.

This was after a series of tests were conducted when Mwepu returned to Brighton from Bamako where he was taken ill while on Zambia duty for two friendlies against hosts Mali.

Mwepu did not feature in the friendlies.

Meanwhile, Mwepu is still at Brighton where he has now been employed at the clubs’ academy as an Under-9 team coach-The Kafue.
