On Monday night, the social media buzzed when President Hakainde Hichilema made changes to his Cabinet, barely hours after holding a meeting at State House.
The changes came with just a few days before Finance and National Planning Minister, Situmbeko Musokotwane, is billed to present the 2024 National Budget on Friday.
The President terminated the appointment of Chushi Kasanda as Minister of Information and Media and replaced her with the United Party for National Development (UPND) strongman, Cornelius Mweetwa.
Mweetwa is also UPND spokesperson, and as Minister of Information and Media would assume the role of Government Spokesperson.
His appointment has since generated rave reviews on social media.
Francis Kopa wrote; “things made easier for journalists and the general public. We commend the Republican President for the appointment of Honorable Cornelius Mweetwa as Minister of Information and Media. Thabo has been elevated as PS. Princess Kasune is the new Central Province Minister. Congratulations!.”
David S. Rowland was not happy with the maligning of former Minister Kasanda and he wrote: don’t be in a habit of kicking people when they are down. If the President’s move is welcome let it end there without shaming, blaming or maligning the affected person, nothing lasts forever, remember they too are human just like you. Wish them well in their next endeavor.”
Luts G’abriel also commented on Kasanda’s dismissal that beauty with knowledge. “She served better than those previous ones who were vocalists for nothing. Only when it mattered on government issues not party
A time to serve and to be dismissed. Congratulations madam.”
Alick Simwembele Muchimba said it was long overdue.
“Congratulations to you Honourable Cornelius Mweetwa. Koya buyo omuchende because we’re confident you’re equal to the task. Utayandi abbwaluke,” he said.
Brichwell Andrew Chookole could not hide his excitement and wrote, “let her rest she failed to run the Ministry of Information, Hon Mweetwa will manage it without doubt.”
Chileshe Chanda Evaristo also added to the commentaries by saying, “this was a wrong appointment from the word go. Cornelius was the natural choice right from the beginning. This is a correction of a mistake,” referring to the appointment of Mweetwa.
Namakau Kauseni said: “Cornelius is the man for this Ministry at least baona bana paza ba wrong ba cee.”
Mwape Barbra Zulu Kumwenda said: ”We finally have a minister and permanent secretary at the Ministry of information..
“A minister and his or her permanent secretary must understand the media environment, or atleast relate with the media very well.
“I doubt if the two outgoing ever knew half of the existing media institutions in Zambia. What government policies concerning the media did they ever bring out ?
“Or maybe talk about the government they served : what government polices did they properly articulate?.
Bye bye polio it’s late and am sleepy mweee.”
