Mweetwa confirms ex- President Lungu’s benefits withdrawn by government

Chief Government spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, has confirmed the withdrawal of benefits from former President Edgar Lungu following his announced return to active politics.

Speaking during a media briefing at ZNBC studios in Kitwe on Wednesday, Mweetwa said the law was very clear about an ex-president who engaged in active politics.

“The Secretary to the Cabinet has effected the withdrawal of benefits from former President Lungu following his return to politics,” he stated.

Mweetwa who is Information and Media Minsiter denied claims attributed to the former President that rulling United Party for National Development (UPND ) cadres were planning to hound him, saying the accusations could not be confirmed.

He further stated that the government would continue protecting the former head of the state like any other citizens hence he should not fear the unknown.

Recently, the ex-president announced his return to active politics amid squabbles in the former ruling party.
