Former Ambassador to Ethiopia, Emmanuel Mwamba, has argued that the quickest way for President Hakainde Hichilema to restore his public image was by delivering on his campaign promises, addressing the cost-of-living crisis, and taking decisive action against corruption.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in response to the appointment of the new Ministerial Media Team and UPND Media Team, Mwamba criticized Hichilema for hiring external consultants, such as those from the Brenthurst Foundation and the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, both of which were allegedly placed at State House and the Ministry of Finance, respectively. Mwamba argued that these efforts had failed to deliver tangible results.
“Things started going bad quickly. He hired the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change and located it at both State House and Ministry of Finance. Nothing worked, nothing changed,” Mwamba alleged.
Mwamba further accused the president of resorting to repressive methods, including using the police to intimidate and arrest critics and opposition members, as well as enacting laws like the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act, Sedition, and Criminal Defamation. Despite these measures, he claimed, Hichilema’s public image continued to deteriorate.
“The image of President Hichilema remains in tatters. He recently quietly appointed Whitney Mulobela as State House Special Communications Strategist to address the failings of the Clayson Hamasaka team, yet nothing has changed,” Mwamba added.
Mwamba called on Hichilema to respect democratic institutions, uphold human rights, and ensure the separation of powers, as well as to stop persecuting political opponents in order to rebuild public trust.
