Musenge backs cleansing in judiciary, warns Hichilema against appointing judges for selfish reasons

Mwenya Musenge, leader of the Advocates for People’s Party (APP), has voiced support for President Hakainde Hichilema’s decision to dismiss three Constitutional Court Judges, describing the move as necessary to restore integrity and trust in Zambia’s judiciary.

Speaking to Zambia Monitor on Monday, Musenge emphasized that under the previous Patriotic Front (PF) administration, the judiciary’s credibility had been compromised due to executive interference.

He accused the PF government of manipulating judgments in its favor, eroding public trust.

“I give the President the benefit of the doubt to restore sanity and rebuild confidence in the judiciary. Under the previous government, we saw questionable judgments. I was personally affected when I petitioned the loss of my election in Chimwemwe,” Musenge said.

He also cited internal conflicts within the National Democratic Congress Party as an example of alleged government interference in judicial matters under the PF.

Musenge expressed confidence in President Hichilema’s efforts to cleanse the judiciary, but warned against the possibility of appointing judges who would serve selfish interests.

“If this decision is made to benefit the President’s personal agenda, Zambians will hold him accountable,” he cautioned.

Similarly, Democratic National Party (DNP), leader Sydney Chiyaba, commended the President for following due process, noting that a committee under the Judicial Complaints Commission had reviewed the case before the judges were dismissed.

President Hichilema dismissed Judges Anne Sitali, Mungeni Mulenga, and Palan Mulonda from the Constitutional Court, acting on a recommendation from the Judicial Complaints Commission (JCC).
