Leader of the opposition in Parliament, Brain Mundubile, has accused government of showing signs to weaken the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in its schemes to collapse the entire justice system
Mundubile alleged that this was being done to ensure that those they had maliciously accused of corruption would be convicted even without adducing incriminating evidence in the courts of law.
He said in an interview on Monday that the decision by the UPND government to reduce the powers of the DPP so that he could be answerable to a non-constitutional body showed the desperation by government to control the entire judicial system.

“The UPND government is determined to collapse the Judiciary so that individuals whom they have been trying through the media and the court of public opinion without substantiated allegations and evidence could be taken to court where they have intimidated the judges through the Judicial Complaints Commission (JCC).
“So, we are dealing with a government system that would want to collapse the Judiciary but they have met a challenge when it comes to the DPP. They want to dilute the powers of the DPP so that the entire justice system is collapsed,” Mundubile said.
He, therefore, commended Gilbert Phiri, the Director of Public Prosecutions for having lived up to the professional standard of a lawyer by ensuring that corruption matters that had little or chances of succeeding in court would not be prosecuted despite the State pushing for such cases to be taken to court.
Mundubile said Phiri had maintained his position on a number of matters the State had been wanting to take to court and should, therefore, be commended.
“The new dawn administration thought that since Mr Phiri had been their lawyer while in opposition, he was going to abandon his professionalism and ethics by allowing the prosecution of certain citizens knowing such cases would not succeed,” he said.
