A 21-year-old medical student from Mulungushi University, Fredrick Chilufya, has been arrested for trafficking 476 sachets of heroin and 27 rocks of cocaine.

The arrest was part of an operation conducted by Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) officers in Maramba and Malota compounds in Livingstone.

In a statement issued on Friday, DEC Assistant Public Relations Officer, Theresa Mawere, revealed that Chilufya was identified as one of the largest suppliers of heroin in Livingstone and had been under surveillance for some time.

During the operation, DEC officers also seized a significant quantity of drugs abandoned by fleeing suspects in Malota compound.

“Confiscated items included 112 tablets of Diazepam, 38 sachets of high-grade cannabis, two pre-packs of loose cannabis, and 2,500 tablets of Benzhexol, commonly known as Artane,”Mawere said.

In a related incident in Central Province, DEC officers apprehended Doreen Katenta, 49, a resident of Katuba Area in Kapiri Mposhi District.

Katenta was found in possession of 6.93 kilogrammes of dry loose cannabis concealed in a Chitenge material and eight pre-packs of dry loose cannabis wrapped in plastics.

Another suspect, John Mwelwa, 41, from Musambula Village in the 15 miles area, was arrested for trafficking 18 balls and two plastic bags of dry loose cannabis, weighing 1.6 kilogrammes.

Further operations in Chisamba District led to the arrest of Getrude Tembo, 24, from Chombela Village in the 15 miles area, for trafficking 25 pre-packs and 10 balls of dry loose cannabis, totaling 1.2 kilogrammes.

In Mazabuka District, DEC, in collaboration with the Zambia Police Service, responded to public complaints about a surge in drug abuse and trafficking in Manungu Township of Monze District.

In Mansa District, Luapula Province, DEC officers arrested Joseph Chilufya, 33, a resident of Chile Primary School, for trafficking 48 bottles of suspected Codeine and 106 sachets of high-potency cannabis weighing 209 grams.

The contraband, concealed in a box inside a polythene sack, was intercepted at the Mansa bus station.

All suspects are said to be currently in lawful custody and would appear in court soon.

“The Drug Enforcement Commission remains resolute in its mission to combat illicit drugs and protect the public from the detrimental effects of drug abuse,” Mawere stated, urging the public to continue providing valuable information to support the Commission’s operations.
