The opposition All People’s Congress (APC) Party president, Nason Msoni, says Health Minister Sylvia Masebo must withdraw her statement that is labelling or painting all medical personnel as thieves.
Msoni in a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday said political leaders should desist from issuing disparaging statements that only serve to undermine the credibility and the integrity of skilled and trained professionals serving in hospitals under very difficult conditions.
He said unless Ms. Masebo has tangible evidence to prove such allegations of criminality, singling out medical personnel is wrong and most unfortunate under the circumstances.
“To use one paint brush to paint everyone in the medical field as thieves is unfortunate and the statement of Ms. Masebo accusing medical personnel stealing medicine has the potential of undermining industrial harmony in our hospitals,” Msoni said.
He said whereas the pilferage of medicines in the hospitals should be condemned, there is also need to be mindful that making a blanket political statement that implicates all the medical personnel only serves to demoralize them.
During the 58th Zambia Medical Association Scientific Conference and annual General Meeting in Livingstone, Ms. Masebo made unsubstantiated allegation that medical doctors are engaging in drug pilferage.
