Mpepo, Simumba to know fate May 23, as court adjourns in suit alleging corrupt practices

Former president of the National Association of Small and Medium Contractors, Edward Mpepo and the former Secretary General of the same association Danny Simumba have pleaded not guilty to corrupt practices involving more than K75,000.00.

Mpepo and Simumba are facing Seven counts of theft by servant and uttering false documents contrary to the laws of Zambia.

When the matter came up for plea on Wednesday in the Economic and Financial crimes court before magistrate Sylvia Munyinya, the duo denied the charge.

It is alleged in count one that Mpepo and Simumba jointly and whilst acting together on a date unknown but between June 2018, and June, 30 2018, in Lusaka being the President and General Secretary respectively for National Association of Medium and Small-Scale Contractors stole K25,000.00.

This was intended for workshops, benchmarking studies and feasibility studies by the said Association, which funds were derived from the National Road Fund Agency a public body.

In count two, the two are jointly and whilst acting together on a date unknown but between 1st June 2018 and 30th June 2018, at Lusaka, in the Lusaka District of Lusaka Province of the Republic of Zambia, being the President and General Secretary respectively for National Association of Medium and Small-Scale Contractors stole K10,000.00.

The money was intended for workshops, benchmarking studies and feasibility studies by the said Association, which funds were derived from the National Road Fund Agency a public body.

Details in count seven are that Simumba on a date unknown but between June 1, 2018 and June 30 2018 in Lusaka being the General Secretary for National Association of Medium and Small-Scale Contractors jointly and whilst acting together with persons unknown, did knowingly and fraudulently utter a false document, namely receipt no. 051 from Karl Human Capital Ltd, purporting to have received consultancy services for a business plan when in fact not.

The court has since adjourned the matter to May 23, 2023 for commencement of trial.
