The Secretary-General of the Party of National Unity and Progress (PNUP), Stella Chintu, has dismissed a statement attributed to party president Highvie Hamundudu endorsing the United Party for National Development (UPND) Alliance ahead of the 2026 general elections.
In a public statement, Hamundudu had declared support for President Hakainde Hichilema, calling it PNUP’s official position.
However, Chintu denied this, stating that no such decision had been made by the party’s leadership.
She explained that on October 11, 2024, PNUP’s National Operations Committee (NOC) convened to deliberate on potential political alliances, including with the UPND, UKA, and TONSE Alliances.
“After thorough deliberations, the NOC resolved to establish a task force to engage with these alliances and explore modalities, conditions, and possible frameworks for collaboration,” Chintu said in a statement issued on Monday in Lusaka.
She stated that the task force’s findings were still under review, and that no final decision had been reached.
“We categorically clarify that Hamundudu’s remarks do not reflect the resolution of the NOC or the party’s official position,” she stressed, adding that PNUP remained committed to democratic principles and collective decision-making.
Chintu assured party members and supporters that any alliance or endorsement would be based on transparent deliberations and align with PNUP’s mission to provide credible leadership and address Zambia’s pressing challenges.
“The task force is actively executing its mandate, and the party will only announce an official position after evaluating its findings and recommendations,” she said.
Chintu reaffirmed PNUP’s dedication to fostering national unity, addressing the country’s challenges, and ensuring decisions reflect the best interests of the Zambian people.
