A motorcyclist has died after being struck by a Toyota Surf at the Makeni checkpoint on Mumbwa Road in Lusaka.

Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, identified the deceased as Jonas Chola, aged between 30 and 35.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Hamoonga said Chola was riding a Zam Speed motorbike (registration number CAE 9517) when he was stopped by officers for not wearing a helmet and having non-functional tail lights.

“While officers were addressing the violations, a Toyota Surf, travelling in the same direction, struck Chola, causing fatal injuries. He died on the spot,” Hamoonga stated.

The Toyota Surf, driven by Brain Mtonga, 43, of West View, Lusaka, sustained significant damage, including a shattered front windscreen and damaged right fender, headlamp, and rear door window.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was due to excessive speed by the Toyota Surf,” Hamoonga added.

Chola’s body had been transported to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary for a postmortem, with burial scheduled for today.

Hamoonga urged motorists to observe speed limits for the safety of all road users.

In a separate incident, Lusaka Central Police have arrested a suspected thief, M’Teddy Chulu, 43, of Misisi Compound, linked to a series of thefts involving motor vehicle parts in Lusaka.

Chulu was apprehended after being caught stealing a wiper from a Toyota Sienta, reported by Godfrey Chipili, a soldier, of Apollo, Lusaka West.

The suspect later led police to a shop along Freedom Way, where stolen vehicle parts were recovered, including 76 side mirrors, 49 wipers, and other items.

The police have urged victims of these thefts to visit Lusaka Central Police to identify their stolen property.
