Motor dealers, standards agency partner to ensure safe used-vehicle imports into Zambia

The Zambia Motor Dealers Association (ZMDA) has reportedly partnered with the Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) to ensure that only safe used motor vehicles are imported into the country.

The two institutions have pledged to collaborate in enforcing safety regulations and promoting compliance with Zambia’s mandatory standards for used vehicle imports.

In a statement issued on Sunday, ZCSA Director of Legal and Compliance, Tafuna Mumba Phiri, stressed the importance of cooperation between the two organizations.

Speaking in Lusaka on Friday during a stakeholder engagement meeting between ZCSA and ZMDA officials, Phiri reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to working with motor dealers to ensure all imports meet the required safety standards.

She urged importers to comply with the Zambian Standard for used motor vehicles, particularly the mandatory pre-shipment inspection requirement.

This process, enforced through appointed agents in exporting countries, aims to minimize the risk of unsafe vehicles entering Zambia.

ZCSA enforces the Zambian Standard ZS 560, a compulsory code of practice for inspecting and testing used motor vehicles for roadworthiness.

The regulation mandates that all imported used vehicles undergo a safety inspection before export to ensure they meet the necessary standards.

ZMDA Chairperson, Kelvin Kameta, echoed the need for collaboration between the two institutions to prevent the importation of substandard vehicles.

He pledged to educate importers on the importance of compliance with compulsory safety regulations.

Recognizing the high volume of used vehicle imports into Zambia, the government has made the Zambian Standard ZS 560 mandatory to enhance public safety.

The institution has also intensified nationwide public education and stakeholder engagement initiatives to promote adherence to compulsory standards across various product categories.
