Mob destroys police post, attacks murder suspect in Mununga

Enraged residents of Mununga in Chiengi District have vandalised a local police post and forcibly removed a murder suspect following the discovery of a woman’s body.

On January 13, 2025, police were informed that Grace Kaoma, 44, from Kapampale Village, had gone missing on January 12.

The family later received a distressing call from Kaoma’s ex-husband, Derrick Mwale, claiming she had been murdered and buried near her farming field.

Upon investigating, officers found Kaoma’s body buried in a bush, with a hoe nearby.

The victim showed signs of trauma, including bleeding from the mouth and nose, bruises on her right hand, and a swollen face, suggesting she had been assaulted.

Police investigations pointed to Mwale, who had reportedly threatened Kaoma after their divorce. He was apprehended and detained at the Mununga Police Post.

However, on January 14, 2025, at around 05:00 hours, a mob gathered outside the police post after learning about the suspect’s detention.

The mob attacked the officers on duty, broke into the cells, and caused extensive damage to the police post.

They forcibly removed Mwale and subjected him to severe mob violence, resulting in deep cuts to his head.

The situation was brought under control after reinforcements arrived from Chienge Police Station. Mwale was rushed to a nearby clinic, where he remains in an unstable condition.

Zambia Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, condemned the mob justice and the destruction of public property, stressing that such actions undermine the rule of law and public safety.

“We urge the community to allow the police to conduct thorough investigations and bring offenders to justice through the legal process,” Hamoonga said.

He reminded the public that mob justice and property destruction were serious offenses punishable under Zambian law and appealed for calm as investigations continue.
