Minister Nzovu says govt accelerating water, sanitation projects with about K3.1 billion

The government has highlighted numerous water and sanitation projects under the drought response programme, expected to be completed this year with a budget of approximately K3.1 billion.

Water Development and Sanitation Minister, Collins Nzovu, announced that most projects were over 99 percent complete and were set for commissioning by September 2024.

During a media briefing on Sunday in Lusaka, Nzovu mentioned the Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Phase Two project, expected to benefit 850,000 people in Kitwe, Kalulushi and Chambishi on the Copperbelt.

The project cost the government US$59.91 million and is expected to be completed by May 2026.

“The over 150 million euros Zambia Water Supply and Sanitation Project is being implemented by Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company,” Nzovu said.

This project is expected to benefit Chingola, Mufulira, and Chililabombwe, with a combined population of over 600,000.

Nzovu also mentioned the Kafulafuta Water Supply project, implemented by Kafubu Water Supply and Sanitation Company, with a total cost of US$449 million.

This project aims to provide water to Ndola, Luanshya, Masaiti and Mpongwe, impacting about 830,000 people by addressing poor water quality from Kafubu Dam.

Other projects included the Bauleni Water Supply Improvement Phase One, targeting 107,706 residents, and sewer house connections in Matero, Kaunda Square Stage One, Emmasdale, Kanyama and Industries, benefiting over 78,064 people.

“The emergency water supply and sanitation project in Mporokoso District, costing K86.9 million, involves installing new pumps, erecting reservoirs, and expanding the water network,” Nzovu stated.

This project is 98 percent complete and would benefit about 30,000 people once commissioned in October 2024, according to the minister.

Additionally, the government is said to be constructing and rehabilitating water supply systems in Mpulungu District at a cost of K173.7 million.

The project is said to be 52 percent complete and would be expedited to finish by December 2024, benefiting about 40,000 people.

Nzovu also highlighted a project in Nakonde, constructing and rehabilitating the water supply system at a cost of K33.9 million, which is 98 percent complete and said to benefit about 65,000 people by September 2024.

The minister also noted several other projects nationwide, aimed at addressing the drought declared a national disaster.
