Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Elvis Nkandu, has announced that the revised sports policy is currently before the Cabinet awaiting approval.
Nkandu stated that the revised policy emphasized the commercialisation of sports through hosting competitions and providing opportunities for athletes to excel and advance to major events.
Speaking at the launch of the 2024 Zambia Premier League (ZPL) Carling Black Label Charity Shield in Lusaka on Wednesday, Nkandu highlighted the need to increase the number of sports competitions to include women, girls and those in remote areas.
“The bold step by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to professionalise football by creating the Zambia Premier League (ZPL) shall ultimately lead to the commercialization of football,” Nkandu said.
He added that this move aligned with the Ministry’s goals of youth empowerment and employment.
Nkandu urged FAZ and ZPL to use events like the ZPL Carling Black Label Charity Shield to identify top-performing footballers who can contribute to the National Team’s success.
“The New Dawn Government has demonstrated its commitment to promoting football development in the country by covering the costs of Senior Men and Women National Teams,” he stated.
