The Emerald and Semi-Precious Stones Mining Association of Zambia (ESMAZ) has advocated for a more equitable distribution of mineral resources across Africa to benefit small-scale miners.

ESMAZ president, Victor Kalesha, proposed that major African mining companies should provide essential support, including equipment, outsourcing and market access, to small-scale miners.

He expressed believe this approach would ensure that mineral resources were fairly distributed and that small-scale miners can compete more effectively.

“It is time for Africa to protect its mineral resources and empower small-scale miners to sell their minerals at competitive prices through these African mining giants,” Kalesha stated.

He called for a collaborative forum involving African mining giants, small-scale miners, government officials and technocrats to devise strategies for enhancing the value of Africa’s minerals and safeguarding its resources.

Kalesha also urged the African Minerals Development Centre, under the African Union, to facilitate partnerships between large mining companies and small-scale miners like those represented by ESMAZ.

By sharing knowledge and resources, Kalesha expressed believe that Africa can unlock its full mineral potential and retain a greater share of its mineral wealth.
