The Mines Contractors and Suppliers Association (MCSA) has urged Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) to accelerate the registration and issuance of certificates to local contractors and suppliers.
The association raised concerns that the process had stalled since last year, leaving many contractors and suppliers in limbo.
In a telephone interview with Zambia Monitor, MCSA President Costa Mwaba explained that MCM had received approximately 3,000 new entrants, but that the majority of them have yet to receive certificates to begin operations.
Mwaba emphasized the need for Mopani to expedite the process to enable affected contractors to commence their business transactions.
He pointed out that there had been complaints from contractors who felt sidelined by the delays.
He further stressed the importance of timely certification for job creation in the Copperbelt province, which heavily relies on mining activities.
Mwaba noted that Mopani was currently conducting internal scrutiny and plans to issue certificates to qualified contractors and suppliers, but he believes the process had been delayed.
