Metrology agency probes case of underweight mealie meal bags in Lusaka

The Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) has seized 15 bags of mealie meal, each supposed to be 25 kilogrammes, from a shop in Lusaka’s State Lodge area after public complaints about the product’s weight.

ZMA Senior Public Relations Officer, Sandra Mwila, confirmed that the investigation revealed the bags were underweight.

Inspectors found that 13 bags of the same brand weighed an average of 22 kilogrammes each, leading to their seizure.

Two additional bags from a different brand, also underweight, were confiscated for further investigation.

Mwila noted that a follow-up inspection at the manufacturing plant showed the bags met the required standards.

ZMA had initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the discrepancy.

“The Agency encourages the public to be vigilant when purchasing mealie meal and to report any suspicions of underweight products,” Mwila said.
