The Burundian government has called on regional member states of Lake Tanganyika corridor to consider investing in improving the road infrastructure which is in a bad state.
This is in an effort to enhance intra-trade.
Lake Tanganyika is shared among four countries namely Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi, as well as Zambia.
Speaking during the commemoration of his country’s 61st Independence Anniversary in Lusaka on Saturday, Burundi Ambassador to Zambia, Pascal Ruhomvyumworo, said the poor road infrastructure around the Lake has led to low trade among the countries surrounding the lake.
“There is need to modernize the lake by linking all ports with good roads and the rail lines in order to improve the betterment of people especially between Zambia and Burundi,” Ruhomvyumworo said.
He also commended Zambia for welcoming Burundian nationals in the country, which has also improved the trade relations between the two countries.
