Copperbelt Minister, Elisha Matambo, has directed law enforcement agencies to secure the Sensele Mine tragedy site as search for the remaining bodies continues.

During his visit to the site, Matambo emphasized the need for security and coordination in the ongoing recovery efforts.

Of the 36 miners trapped in the early hours of December 1, 2023, 27 bodies have been retrieved, with one survivor found.

“The law enforcement agencies must ensure the retrieval site is secure, allowing only those small-scale miners working with the technical team on the recovery operation,” Matambo stated during a briefing after touring the site in Chingola on Friday.

He announced that another meeting was scheduled for Tuesday next week to decide on the next steps regarding the Sensele Mine recovery operation.

“The visit to the Sensele Mine tragedy scene was to assess the recovery operations at the site in Chingola on the Copperbelt,” Matambo said.

Matambo also assured the small-scale miners working with the technical team that the government had allocated funds for their payments, which will be disbursed soon.
