Malawi’s Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu, has issued a stern warning against those spreading false reports about President Lazarus Chakwera’s health, stating that the government will take firm action against purveyors of fake news.

This followed a wave of social media posts falsely claiming the President was unwell.

Kunkuyu clarified that Chakwera was in excellent health and actively preparing for his official engagements in the Southern Region, which begin Thursday.

“The President is in office, actively preparing for his official assignments in the Southern Region starting tomorrow,” Kunkuyu told Timveni Online.

He further emphasized that Malawi’s laws provided for punishment of individuals who create, publish and spread misinformation, adding that these laws would be applied “unsparingly.”

Additionally, Kunkuyu confirmed that President Chakwera would participate in a golf tournament in Blantyre over the weekend.

Kunkuyu’s strong message is aimed at curbing the spread of misinformation and reinforcing public trust in official government communications.
