The Patriotic Front (PF) says the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND ) government’s prioritization of foreigners at the expense of locals is a clear indication that it does not care about their suffering.
PF Information and Publicity Chairperson, Raphael Nakacinda, said it was heartless for President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration, through the Ministry of Local Government, to chase street vendors from the streets of Lusaka and sending them into destitution.
Reacting to the recent removal of street vendors from the streets of Lusaka by government, Nakacinda wonders why government would chase street vendors yet did not have a proper plan but sending them into destitution.
“This is uncalled for. They could have found a better way to handle that situation and not in the inhuman manner they have handled this matter.
“In fact, they, UPND, have greatly contributed to the increase of street vendors on our streets because of the high cost of living,” he noted.
Nakacinda alleged that the UPND’s failure to find solutions to the country’s challenges such as resolving the Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) and Mopani Mine issues had led to the influx of street vendors.
“How is it that we give tax holidays and concessions to foreigners and fail to subsidize Zambians like street vendors?
“Those marketeers, those vendors needed some kind of cushioning of some kind instead of prioritizing foreigners,” Nakacinda added.
Nakacinda noted that the UPND’s prioritization of foreigners for locals should be condemned by all well meaning Zambians.
The PF Spokesperson also stated that Local Government Minister, Garry Nkombo, was lying to Zambians that the PF was consulted in making a decision of removing street vendors from Lusaka streets.
Nakacinda said the current administration cannot claim to have agreed with the PF because the UPND administration had no heart for citizens, especially those struggling to make a living from the streets.
“They have caused misery in many families as life has become unbearable for many Zambians today,” he added.
