Ghana – Former President, John Dramani Mahama, has officially been declared the winner of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, marking a significant return to the nation’s highest office.
The Electoral Commission (EC) announced on Monday, December 9, that Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55 percent of the valid votes cast.
His main rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 4,657,304 votes, equating to 41.61 percent.
The victory also delivered a resounding success for Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC), which achieved a parliamentary majority.
According to GX Extractive, the NDC has secured over 160 seats, reclaiming key constituencies traditionally held by the NPP.
This dual victory strengthens Mahama’s mandate as he prepares to assume office on January 7, 2025.
The election witnessed a 73 percent voter turnout and was largely peaceful, although isolated incidents of violence and logistical challenges were reported in constituencies such as Damongo, Ablekuma Central, and Okaikwei North.
In a concession speech, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged Mahama’s victory and urged his supporters to accept the outcome.
“We have fought a good fight. The people have spoken, and we must respect their decision,” Bawumia stated, calling for unity and calm as Ghana moves forward.
Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s President from 2012 to 2016, will address the nation shortly, outlining his vision for his second term.
His administration will face significant challenges but can lean on the parliamentary majority secured by the NDC to implement its agenda.
Observers, both local and international, have praised the Electoral Commission for conducting a transparent and credible election despite minor challenges.
Mahama’s return follows earlier predictions from organizations like the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Global InfoAnalytics, and Fitch, which forecasted a victory for the opposition.
As Mahama prepares for his second term, Ghana enters a new political chapter, marked by a shift in leadership and a strengthened NDC presence in Parliament.
