More than 10,000 people are expected to benefit from the drought emergency cash transfer in Lusangazi district of Eastern Province.

The district identified approximately 12,604 households during an exercise to locate vulnerable individuals, and 10,124 households have been selected to receive aid.

District Social Welfare Officer Ristone Njobvu announced these details during a sensitisation meeting for the drought emergency cash transfer programme.

He stated that the district had 10,778 social cash transfer beneficiaries, who will receive a K200 monthly top-up in addition to their regular payments.

“For those already on the social cash transfer programme, they will receive a K200 top-up on the money they currently receive each month,” Njobvu said.

He explained that beneficiaries who receive K400 bi-monthly will now get an additional K400, and those with disabilities who receive K800 will now get K1,200 bi-monthly.

Njobvu also noted that the payment would cover the May-June period and include those on the drought emergency cash transfer.

Lusangazi Council Chairperson, Blackson Tembo, urged beneficiaries not to misuse the funds and encouraged them to purchase food to ensure their food security.
