Police in Lusaka have arrested seven suspects in connection with the theft of 16 animals belonging to Astrida Phiri of Nyelele Village, Nyimba District, Eastern Province.
Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, revealed that the animals were stolen two days ago, with investigations leading to the recovery of one and a half carcasses stored in a cold room at Soweto Market.
The stolen meat was transported to the market using a white Mitsubishi Canter, registration number CAD 2751, and part of it had already been sold to a cold room operator.
Hamoonga said in a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday that police received a tip-off on January 4, 2025, about suspicious activities involving the sale of a carcass at Soweto Market.
Officers swiftly acted on the information, apprehending seven individuals, including the driver of the vehicle, his assistant, five people who had hired the vehicle from Nyimba District, and the buyer of the stolen carcass.
The Mitsubishi Canter has been impounded, and the cold room where the stolen meat was stored has been seized for further investigations.

A message has also been sent to Nyimba Police to facilitate the transfer of the suspects back to Nyimba District, where they will face formal charges of stock theft and related offenses.
Hamoonga identified the suspects as Thomas Chungwe, aged 52, from Mwanda Village in Nyimba; Clever Phiri, aged 52, from Mashati Village in Chipata; Fuckson Lungu, aged 54, from Mulila Village in Nyimba; Mekelani Tembo, aged 39, from Nyimba; Tyson Phiri, aged 30, the driver, from Mtendere Compound in Nyimba; Samson Lungu, aged 18, the driver’s assistant, from Mtendere Compound in Nyimba; and Ruth Nguni, aged 64, the buyer, from Kanyama Compound in Lusaka.
Hamoonga commended the concerned citizen who reported the suspicious activities and urged members of the public to remain vigilant.
He emphasized that timely reporting of such incidents helped law enforcement officers in preventing and combating crime.
