A 37-year-old man of Misisi Compound, identified as Penis Tembo, has allegedly strangled his wife, Tionenji, before taking his own life in their two-roomed house.

Police spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, revealing that officers found Tionenji’s body in the sitting room, lying on the cushions and covered with a blanket.

She had visible injuries, including a swollen right cheek, bruises on her head, wrist, and legs, as well as a bloody discharge from her nostrils.

Tembo’s body was discovered intact, lying face down on the bed with blood oozing from his mouth and a white substance from his nostrils.

Police suspect he took his life after murdering his wife in an incident believed to have occurred on February 3 around 15:00 hours.

The alarm was raised by neighbors who last saw the couple on the evening of February 1.

Concerned after not seeing them for days, they attempted to check on the house, finding the door locked from the inside with a metal bar.

After notifying the landlady—who was also the victim’s mother—they broke the door open and discovered the bodies.

The remains of both victims have been deposited at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Mortuary for postmortem and burial.

Hamoonga stated that an inquiry file has been opened, and investigations are ongoing.

He urged the public to seek help from the Police Victim Support Unit to resolve disputes peacefully and prevent similar tragedies.
