The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has scheduled August 2, 2024, to deliver its ruling on whether Police Officer, Given Kayelu, has a case to answer regarding the theft of an AK 47 rifle valued at K3,000.

Kayelu, 27, faces one count of theft by a public servant.

It was alleged that he stole the government-issued rifle between June 4 and 6, 2023, in Lusaka.

Detective Inspector Chiyemba Muleze testified that Kayelu was apprehended by Gwembe police while attempting to sell the rifle.

Kayelu claimed he legally withdrew the firearm at government printers, but investigations revealed no record of this.

The rifle was later traced to Roma camp, where it was withdrawn by Constance Chonya and given to Banda, who deposited it at government printers, where it went missing.

Under questioning, Kayelu stated the rifle was for his father-in-law’s protection, but the response was deemed unsatisfactory, prompting Chiyemba to charge him with theft by a public servant.

Kayelu denied the charge, and the court will deliver its ruling on August 2, 2024.
